Recite Yā-Sīn word by word

Yā-Sīn is the thirty-sixth surah, eighty-three verses, revealed in Makkah. It is one of the most-read surahs — for the sick, for the dead, or simply because people learned it young. Eighty-three verses is longer than Mulk, shorter than Kahf: long enough for fatigue, compact enough for one session if you split it in three.

The isolated letters. Yā-Sīn is not a word you swallow. It is a madd lāzim ḥarfī: six ḥarakāt on the sīn, not two, not “fairly long”. That is the first test of the surah, and the one almost everyone fails by rushing into wa l-qurʾāni l-ḥakīm. Hold the six counts. Only then go to verse 2.

وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ ٱلۡحَكِيمِ

Wa l-qurʾāni l-ḥakīm. Qalqalah on qāf if you stop on qurʾān in isolation; here you continue. The hamza in qurʾān must be heard — it is not qurān. The ḥāʾ of ḥakīm is not an English h.

Three blocks, not eighty-three verses in one run

The trap in Yā-Sīn is not one verse: it is the rhythm. The rhyme in -ūn / -īn / -īm pushes you to speed up, and every speed-up shortens a pause madd. By verse 40 you no longer have the length you had at verse 2. That is what the mic makes visible: you stall on a word you thought you knew, because you swallowed it.

The rules that carry the surah

Madd is the subject of Yā-Sīn, from the first glyph to the verse endings. Qalqalah returns on qāf and dāl. Ghunnah on the doubled nūn of the rhyme. Idghām in the narrative joins. First work يس ten times alone, the way you would work aḍ-ḍāllīn at the end of Fātiḥah: same gesture, six ḥarakāt, before the rest of the text.

Tilmidh shows Quran.com Uthmani tajweed, phonetics under each word, and only advances if the mic recognised the word. It does not time your six ḥarakāt on يس. It stops you skipping them on the way to verse 2. Exact duration: a muqriʾ.

After Yā-Sīn, Al-Kahf (longer, same block logic) or Al-Mulk (shorter, evening recitation). Do not mix the three in one session.
