The basmala, and the lām of Allāh
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In bismi-Llāh the lām of Allāh is light (muraqqaq), because it follows the kasra of bismi. It is heavy (mufakhkham) only after a fatḥa or a ḍamma, as in qāla-Llāhu. In ar-raḥmān ar-raḥīm the lām of the article merges into the rāʾ (idghām shamsī), and the nūn with shaddah in raḥmān carries a full ghunnah.
Verses 5 to 7, where it breaks

Why is the lām of Allāh light in the basmala?
Because it follows a kasra, the one in bismi. The lām of Allāh is heavy after a fatḥa or a ḍamma and light after a kasra. The preceding vowel decides, not the word itself.
What is the rule on aḍ-ḍāllīn at the end?
It is a madd lāzim held for six ḥarakāt, followed by a lām with shaddah. It is the word beginners shorten most, because it arrives just before the end of the surah.
